TRAI slaps major network providers with the hefty fine of 3050 Crores

Citing to the prevailing situation around the newcomer in the telecom industry : Reliance Jio Networks, India’s telecom regulator (TRAI) slapped hefty combined penalty of Rs.3050 crore on Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India, and Idea Cellular for allegedly denying interconnectivity to jio.

TRAI says that the denial of interconnect points by the Incumbents was for stiffening competition and it was clearly anti Customer

As per TRAI’s recommendation, the penalty amounts to rupees 1050 crores each for both Vodafone and Airtel. For Idea cellular it comes to about rupees 950 crores.

TRAI in a detailed letter to the department of telecommunications secretary dated October 21, said that the actions of these three operators were strictly against the public interest.

This recommendation actually came on a complaint that was placed by Reliance jio stating that 75 percentage of the calls on its network were failing as the accused service providers were not giving enough points of interconnect that would help complete the calls.

The positive side of this penalty implementation is that now Jio customers can hopefully make calls to other networks without any issues in connectivity or call drops .
